Easter Vigil

St. Louis Catholic Church, Waco, 2026

The Easter Vigil, the holiest day in the liturgical year, commemorates the resurrection of our Lord, who triumphs over death on the third day.

It begins with the Lucenarium, the service of light, which symbolizes Christ, the light of the world, breaking through the darkness. It’s followed by the Exultet, the Easter Proclamation, before continuing into several readings accounting for all salvation history. Then comes the celebration of the Rites of Initiation for those who are becoming Catholic. Finally, the three-day liturgy ends with the Eucharist, where Christ returns to his throne in the tabernacle.
